Happy International Women’s Day

Happy International Women’s Day

International Women’s day, which is being celebrated on March 8th every year, is not the day that was created as a new phenomenon for the social media age. It is a day that marks the achievements of women in a political, social, economic and cultural space over 100 years ago, in the early 1900s and has been observed ever since.

The first International Women’s Day is being celebrated on 1911, making this the 106th International Women’s Day.

  • In 1908, 15,000 women marched on New York city to demand shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.
  • In 1909, the first National Women’s Day (NWD) was observed across the US on 28 February.
  • In 1910, A woman named Clara Zetkin, tabled the idea of an International Women's Day, that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day
  • In 1911, following the decision made on 1910, International Women's Day was celebrated for the the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March.
  • In 1913, International Women's Day was changed to 8 March and this day has remained the global date for International Women's Day ever sinceIn 1914, women across Europe conducted rallies against the war and to express women's solidarity.
  • In 1977, the General Assembly took a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace

Many annual theme were fixed on every year, in which an annual theme in 1996 -  "Celebrating the past, Planning for the Future".

  • In 1997 - "Women at the Peace table",
  • In 1998 - "Women and Human Rights",
  • In 1999 - "World Free of Violence Against Women", and so on each year until the current.

More recent themes were like, "Empower Rural Women, End Poverty & Hunger" and "A Promise is a Promise - Time for Action to End Violence Against Women".

  • In 2011, the 100-year centenary of International Women's Day was celebrated in United States, where the President Barack Obama proclaimed March to be "Women's History Month"

Then, Hillary Clinton launched the "100 Women Initiative: Empowering Women and Girls through International Exchanges"

The idea behind the theme of 2016’s IWD is to focus on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – to reduce hunger, poverty, disease and gender equality – which was already adopted by world leaders at the 2015 UN summit.
